According to Reuters, an explosion occurred in Gao De Village, Nan Kan Town, in northern Shan State of Myanmar on May 31 local time, resulting in at least 55 deaths. The area is controlled by the Myanmar Karen National Liberation Army. The armed group said that the incident was caused by an accidental explosion of explosives used for mining operations.
The armed group claimed that the explosion caused casualties, but did not disclose the exact number of deaths.
Reuters reported, citing the BBC and local news agency Shwe Phee Myay, that at least 55 people were killed, including 25 women and 30 men. Dozens of others were also injured.

The Myanmar Karen National Liberation Army posted on social media, stating that they are investigating the explosion that occurred at noon on the 31st local time. Those responsible will be held accountable.
The armed group added that it will provide relief, medical care, and rehabilitation services to the families affected by the explosion as soon as possible.
