Typhoon Bawei Intensifies, Brings Heavy Rain to Large swathes of China

According to reports from People's Daily, Xinhua News Agency, and the Central Meteorological Observatory, Typhoon Bawei, the ninth typhoon of this year, strengthened to the category of a severe typhoon at zero hours today (November 11). At 6 a.m. today, the center of Bawei was located about 540 kilometers east-southeast of the border between Zhejiang and Fujian, with the maximum wind force reaching level 14. The Central Meteorological Observatory continued to issue orange warnings for typhoons, orange warnings for heavy rain, and yellow warnings for severe convective weather.

It is expected that Typhoon Bawei will move rapidly towards the northwest at a speed of 30 to 35 kilometers per hour. Its intensity will remain relatively stable, and it will gradually approach the coastlines of Zhejiang and Fujian. It is predicted to make landfall around the area between Taizhou in Zhejiang and Fuding in Fujian early on the 12th (a severe typhoon level or typhoon category, with intensity of 13 to 14 on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, and wind speeds of 38 to 45 meters per second). After making landfall, it will shift its direction towards the north, with its intensity gradually weakening.

It is expected that from 8:00 on the 11th to 8:00 on the 12th, there will be heavy rain in some areas of Beijing, northern Tianjin, central and northern Hebei, southeastern Inner Mongolia, western and northern Liaoning, eastern central Jilin, central and southern Shaanxi, southeastern Qinghai, southwestern Gansu, western Sichuan Basin, Zhejiang, northern Fujian, northeastern Jiangxi, and Taiwan. Among these areas, some will experience extremely heavy rain. In northeastern Beijing, northeastern Hebei, and northern Liaoning, there may be extremely heavy rainfall (250-280mm). In eastern and southern Zhejiang, northeastern Fujian, and central and northern Taiwan, there will be extremely heavy rainfall (250-800mm).

It is expected that from 8:00 on the 11th to 8:00 on the 12th, there will be severe thunderstorms with winds of force 8 or above, or hail in some areas of the western and southern parts of northeastern China, the central and northern parts of North China, the eastern part of southwestern China, and the eastern part of the Yangtze River region. In particular, areas in the central and western parts of Liaoning, the central part of Hebei, and the eastern part of Zhejiang may experience thunderstorms with winds of force 10 or above. The maximum wind force could reach force 11 or higher, and there is a possibility of tornado occurrences in some local areas.

In parts of eastern Inner Mongolia, western and central-southern regions of the Northeast, central and northern regions of North China, eastern regions of Northwest China, eastern and southern regions of Southwest China, and eastern regions of Jiangnan, there will be short-term heavy rainfall with hourly rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters. In particular, in parts of northern-central Liaoning, central and northeastern Hebei, eastern and southern Beijing, northern and western Tianjin, eastern Shaanxi, eastern and southwestern Shanxi, central and southwestern Zhejiang, and southwestern Sichuan Basin, the hourly rainfall will exceed 50 millimeters, with maximum amounts reaching over 80 millimeters.
