China Dismisses US Claims of Election Interference

July 17th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference.

A reporter asked that, according to reports, U.S. President Donald Trump has declassified intelligence that indicates China interfered in the 2020 U.S. presidential elections. This contradicts previous assessments by the U.S. intelligence community. What is the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' comment on this? Will Trump's statements affect Sino-U.S. relations?

Lin Jian stated that the claims of the US are entirely baseless and intended to smear others. These claims have long been proven to be nonsense. China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in internal affairs and has neither had an interest nor ever interfered in the US elections. On the contrary, who is it that constantly interferes in other countries' internal affairs, continuously monitors governments, businesses, and ordinary citizens around the world without discrimination, and steals data from citizens of other countries on a large scale? The international community understands this very clearly.

Lin Jian emphasized that we urge the US side to reflect on its actions, stop unfairly slandering China, not to use China as a tool in elections, and to do more things that are beneficial to Sino-US relations.

According to the BBC, on July 16 local time, Trump spoke at the White House, falsely claiming that China had tried to influence the election in favor of Biden.

Previously, Trump has made several false accusations regarding voter fraud and foreign interference, related to his defeat by Biden in the 2020 election.

Reports indicate that Trump's statements contradict the assessments of U.S. intelligence agencies. A report from the National Intelligence Council in 2021 stated that it is “highly confident” that China did not interfere in the 2020 U.S. presidential election.

The Chinese side has also stated several times that the U.S. elections are matters of domestic politics within the United States. The Chinese side has no interest in them and has never intervened. It has also emphasized that some people in the United States should immediately stop trying to include China in their domestic politics.
