Nicaragua Severes Diplomatic Relations with Italy over Tirades by Foreign Minister

On July 16 local time, Nicaragua announced that it had severed diplomatic relations with Italy.

According to Reuters, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nicaragua reported that Italian Foreign Minister Tajani's 'unjustified, aggressive, and irresponsible remarks, which publicly insulted the people and government of Nicaragua, seriously violated the basic diplomatic norms of mutual respect between nations and peoples.'

The statement states that in order to firmly maintain Nicaragua’s national sovereignty and national dignity, “we hereby officially inform the Italian government, particularly Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, that Nicaragua has decided to sever all diplomatic relations with the Italian government.”

The Party announces that it will “launch and implement all necessary procedures to fulfill its decision on safeguarding national sovereignty and honor.”

Reports say that Tania has once again publicly demanded the extradition of Alessio Cassimi. Cassimi was a member of the Italian Red Brigades and was sentenced for participating in the 1978 kidnapping and murder of Italy’s former Prime Minister Aldo Moro. Tania also questioned the Nicaraguan government’s stance regarding Cassimi’s long-term residence in Nicaragua.

According to Reuters, Casimiri was born in Italy and obtained Nicaraguan citizenship in 1989. According to Nicaragua's constitution, the extradition of its own citizens is prohibited. There is also no bilateral extradition treaty between the two countries.
