India Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Train for Green Transportation

According to RT and the Indian News Information Agency website, on July 17, Indian Prime Minister Modi unveiled a line of domestically produced hydrogen-powered trains.

The Indian Railways said that it will operate a hydrogen-fueled passenger railway service with the longest mileage in the world, covering a section of 89 kilometers between Kingard and Sonipat in Haryana, northern India.

Modi said on that day that this is an important step towards green transportation in India.

Modi mentioned that during the past week, the cleaning efforts in Gandhinagar and Haryana have sparked widespread discussion on social media. “Some people even said on social media: ‘Modi, please come often so that our Gandhinagar can remain clean.’ I thank the gentleman who expressed this wish, but today I would like to make a request to the people of Gandhinagar. Tell me, is Modi’s presence really necessary for cleaning? If the people of Gandhinagar and Haryana decide to stop creating mess, will Gandhinagar become dirty? Will Haryana become dirty? The task is simple—no need for Modi to be there personally. You just need to make up your mind; cleaning will become part of our nature, part of our culture. We will make cleaning a part of our daily lives.”

According to reports, India’s first domestically produced hydrogen-powered train consists of 10 carriages and utilizes hydrogen fuel cell technology. It emits only water vapor, achieving zero-carbon operation. The train has a designed speed of 110 kilometers per hour. Developed and manufactured locally in India, this project demonstrates the country’s initiative towards self-reliance. The project costs approximately 110 million rupees (about 7.74 million RMB). It is part of India’s green transformation efforts and helps to fulfill the nation’s mission related to green hydrogen energy. This train provides a clean alternative to electrified transportation on remote routes.
