According to Bloomberg, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a tweet on social media on July 21, stating that the United States plans to impose a 100% tariff on imported generic drugs starting from August 2028. One year later, in August 2029, the tax rate will double to 200%.
Before that, the United States will continue to maintain zero tariffs on imported generic drugs.
Trump said that this measure is aimed at promoting the production of generic drugs back into the United States, and companies that do not establish factories and equipment in the US within the prescribed time frame will face penalties.
According to data from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), more than 90% of the drugs sold in the United States are generic drugs.
In April of this year, Trump signed a document declaring that he would impose a 100% tariff on imported patented drugs and pharmaceutical ingredients, in accordance with Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962.
Trump stated on the 21st that the existing policies regarding patented drugs, branded drugs, or innovative drugs have "achieved great success," and will remain unchanged.
