Trump Demands Iran Cease Nuclear Program, Open Strait of Hormuz

According to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on May 29 that he would soon make a decision regarding a proposed extension of the ceasefire agreement with Iran. The ceasefire, which began in early April, is expected to be extended by another 60 days, in order to gain more time for negotiations toward achieving a permanent end to the war.

Trump demanded that Iran must relinquish control over the Strait of Hormuz and destroy its capabilities to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has yet to accept these two conditions.

Trump said, Iran must agree to never possess nuclear weapons or nuclear missiles. The Strait of Hormuz must be opened immediately, with unrestricted and free-flow shipping, without any charges. He also added that the United States would remove Irans nuclear materials.

According to sources cited by Irans Fars News Agency, Trumps remarks were an attempt to create a victory.

An Iranian senior source said that the potential agreement does not contain any nuclear-related issues. Irans Foreign Ministry spokesman, Baghaieh, stated that the management of the Hormuz Strait must be determined by negotiations between Iran and Oman.

The Fars News Agency also reported that both Iran and the United States have agreed to unfreeze $12 billion of Iranian assets that were frozen.

Trump stated that he would not have any financial dealings with Iran until further notice. This likely refers to requests from Iran regarding maritime fees, compensation for war losses, or the unfreezing of frozen assets.
