Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said during a regular press conference on the 31st that she answered questions regarding Chinese young mathematicians who won the Fields Medal. She said, "It is delightful to see more and more Chinese youth making a name for themselves on the world stage. I believe this is not only the result of individual efforts but also a reflection of the vibrant spirit of contemporary Chinese youth. It demonstrates their courage and determination to take risks. Youth represent the future, and youth knows no borders. We hope that young people from all countries will work together to use their youthful wisdom to contribute to global development and create a better future for humanity."
Previously, on July 23, 2026, at the opening ceremony of the International Congress of Mathematicians, Chinese mathematicians Deng Yu and Wang Hong received the Fields Medal.
This is the first time a mathematician from China has received the Fields Medal, and it is also the first time that two mathematicians with a background in domestic mathematics education have won this "Nobel prize in mathematics" simultaneously.
The Fields Medal is a prestigious award established by the International Mathematical Union, specifically awarded to young mathematicians under the age of 40. It is presented every four years, with no more than four recipients honored at any given time.
