Jiang Bin: The Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual tool and symbol of Japanese militarism’s aggressive foreign wars. It honors war criminals whose hands are covered in the blood of people from Asia-Pacific countries. The actions of Japanese politicians blatantly violate historical justice and severely hurt the feelings of the people of the Asian-Pacific nations affected by aggression. Essentially, they try to cover up the guilt of aggression and challenge the achievements of the World Anti-Fascist War and the post-war international order. While claiming to pursue peace, they pay homage to the culprits of war crimes—such hypocritical behavior reveals the dangerous intentions of Japanese right-wing forces, who have distorted their understanding of history and are trying to revive militarism.
Acknowledging the history of aggression and deeply reflecting on the crimes of war is the political foundation for Japan to develop relations with its Asian neighbors. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo Trials. We demand that Japan truly learn from history's lessons, stop acting in reverse, and if it insists on promoting "new types of militarism," which could become a source of chaos that threatens regional peace, it will once again face justice and historical reckoning.
