Norwegian King Harald V Hospitalized for Two Weeks

On August 17th, local time, the Norwegian royal family announced that King Harald V of Norway has been hospitalized for treatment and will be on sick leave for two weeks. The royal family also stated that during the king's sick leave, 53-year-old Crown Prince Haakon will temporarily take over his duties.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported that King Harald V of Norway, aged 89, is one of the longest-reigning monarchs in Europe. In recent weeks, he has been receiving cortisone treatment due to a rare blood disorder called hemolytic anemia. This condition causes a decrease in the number of red blood cells in the body, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath.

The royal family stated that the king was hospitalized due to 'fluid accumulation in his body, requiring inpatient treatment'.

In April 2024, the Norwegian royal family stated that due to "age considerations," Harald V would "permanently reduce his public activities." Harald V ascended the throne in January 1991 and has publicly stated that he will not step down from his position.
