A poll released on Friday showed that nearly two-thirds of South Korean citizens want their country to have its own nuclear weapons.
A survey conducted by Gallup Korea among 1,001 Koreans from Tuesday to Thursday showed that 65% of respondents supported the development of nuclear weapons by South Korea, while 30% opposed this idea.
Bloomberg reported that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s request to “significantly reduce” the scale of military exercises between the United States and South Korea has increased concerns in South Korea regarding the reliability of U.S. security commitments. South Korean officials subsequently confirmed that the South Korean side was not informed of this decision in advance.
According to reports, starting from 2024, over 50% of South Koreans of all ages, including those in their 20s, support nuclear energy.
