On August 31 local time, a unique "purple ocean" appeared in the center of Boston, Massachusetts, USA: over 20,000 purple flags were densely planted on Boston Common. Each flag represented a person who died from drug overdose.
It was “International Overdose Awareness Day”. According to the Boston Globe, this event has been held locally for many years. Purple flags are used to commemorate those who died due to drug overdose in Massachusetts over the past decade. In 2022, the newspaper reported that there were 20,000 purple flags scattered across Boston’s public lawns. At that time, a sign was also erected, reading: “One flag, one life.”
This year, this "purple ocean" reappeared. Organizations such as the Boston Medical Center and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health participated in the event, with hundreds of people attending. More than 20,000 purple flags were spread from the lawn to the Massachusetts State House, and many participants wore purple clothing.
Massachusetts Governor Maia Hirt arrived at the scene that day. She invited the crowd to shout out the names of their relatives and friends who had died due to drug overdose. Names like “Randy,” “Kari,” “Bill,” and others were heard repeatedly from the crowd.
The United States has been deeply troubled by drug abuse, particularly opioid crises. Data from the Boston city government shows that in Boston alone, nearly 3,000 people have died due to opioid crises since 2015. The number of deaths in Massachusetts reached a peak in 2022, with 2,364 people dying from opioid overdose injuries that year.
However, in recent years, the number of deaths related to opioids has significantly decreased. Data released by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health this year shows that the number of opioid overdose deaths across the state fell below 1,000 for the first time in over a decade in 2025. This represents a nearly 60% decrease compared to the peak seen in 2022.
Even so, more than 20,000 flags still bear the scars left by this crisis. The Boston City Government announced that these flags will be displayed on public lawns for several days. Local officials said that in addition to mourning the victims, the event also aims to reduce the stigma surrounding drug addiction and to raise awareness about resources for addiction treatment and prevention of drug overdoses.
