According to The Times, Jaguar Land Rover, Britain’s largest automobile manufacturer, plans to lay off 4,000 employees in the next two years. The company is facing multiple pressures, including soaring costs, plummeting sales, and American tariff policies.
According to reports, on the evening of September 4th, the company informed its employees that it would officially announce the layoff plan on July 7th.
Jaguar Land Rover said in a statement that it will implement a voluntary layoff plan aimed at saving approximately 1.7 billion pounds (about 15.428 billion yuan) within two years. The statement mentioned that in order to adapt to the global market situation, Jaguar Land Rover plans to lower its break-even point to 300,000 vehicles and streamline its business structure. The company did not disclose the exact number of employees to be laid off in the statement.
This automobile manufacturer is part of the Indian Tata Motors Corporation, with approximately 33,000 employees in the UK. The company's revenue decreased by nearly 10% in the most recent quarter, and its pre-tax profit fell by 69%, reaching only £109 million.
Bloomberg believes that this layoff will be a blow to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who promised during his campaign to revitalize the country’s industry and create more jobs. A government spokesperson said on the 5th that British Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will hold talks with Jaguar Land Rover management and trade unions next week.
