According to TASS report on September 7, Russia has requested the closure of the German Consulate in Saint Petersburg, requiring it to cease operations by September 18. Russia also requires all German Goethe Institutes within its territory to stop operating, and their staff must leave the country by September 13.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "In view of the unfriendly actions taken by Germany, including the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the 'Russian House' in Berlin, Russia announced the following measures to Germany's envoy in Russia on September 7. Russia has revoked the permission granted to Germany's Consulate General in Saint Petersburg, which is required to cease operating by September 18, 2026; all its staff should also leave the Russian Federation by that date."
On August 5th, German police discovered a drone near a Ukrainian transport aircraft at Leipzig Airport in eastern Germany. The drone was said to be equipped with explosives. According to German media reports, after this incident, multiple pieces of evidence pointed towards Russia. Russia denied this claim, stating that the real culprit behind the incident was Ukraine.
Wadeffel and Germany's Interior Minister Dobritte stated at a press conference on September 1 that Russia is responsible for the failed drone attack that occurred in early August. They decided to close Russia's consulate general in Bonn on September 18, as well as terminate the contracts with the cultural organization 'Russian House' located in Berlin.
tOn the same day, Russian President Putin accused Germany of fabricating evidence, stating that Germany was using this incident to shift blame onto Russia.
tOn September 3, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov stated that after Germany accused Russia for the drone incident at Leipzig Airport, Russia will close its German cultural institutions, the Goethe Institute, located in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg.
