According to a report by Yonhap News Agency on September 21, the front units of the 25th Division of the Korean Army encountered a suspected mine explosion while conducting search operations on the Korean side of the inter-Korean non-military zone. Three people were injured in the incident, with two soldiers suffering serious injuries.
Three injured people have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Some believe that the cause of the incident was likely a landmine explosion, but it is currently impossible to determine whether the landmines that caused the explosion were planted by the South Korean military or the North Korean military.
The Korean War non-military zones and their surroundings are subject to a long-term risk of mines and other explosive materials. Due to historical remnants of explosive devices, as well as suspected drifting or scattered mines, military personnel from both Korea and the United States are occasionally injured in this area.
The South Korean Joint Staff Headquarters stated that they have discovered changes in the terrain on the Korean side of the demilitarized zone, and are discussing with the United Nations Command about the possibility of the North Korean army laying mines there.
