According to a report by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on September 20th, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham expressed appreciation for an agreement reached between Denmark and the United States to 'strengthen Arctic security'. The dispute over Greenland, which had persisted for months, has now been resolved. However, the British Liberal Democrats hold a different view on this matter.
Town Hall officials stated that Burnham and Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed "welcoming of the United States' commitment to the region" during their conversation on the morning of September 20th.
NATO previously stated that this agreement would help stabilize the region. Meanwhile, Trump declared that Denmark will allow the United States to have “permanent control over security and all other necessary matters” on this Danish semi-autonomous territory in the Arctic.
While making the above comments, Bernam is expected to meet Trump for the first time at the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.
Before this agreement was reached, Trump had been threatening to ‘take over’ Greenland for several months, citing national security concerns. The reason was that the region held strategic defensive significance and had mineral wealth.
Although the text of the agreement has not been released yet, Trump stated in a post on “Real Social Media” that the agreement “has no cost to the United States,” meaning that the US can “take necessary measures to protect and defend Greenland’s security.”
He said that the agreement includes a provision: no American counterpart would maintain military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, “unless with our explicit written approval”.
The call notes on Sunday mentioned that Burnham and Fraser-Rikson “welcomed the United States’ commitment to the region, and emphasized the strategic importance of the High North region for European-Antarctic security.”
The British spokesman added, "The Prime Minister congratulated Prime Minister Frederiksen on reaching an agreement that benefits the United States, Greenland, and Denmark. He also stated that he would convey his congratulations to President Trump."
Although Bernam praised the agreement, Ed Davey, leader of the British Liberal Democrats, called it a “masked victory” – essentially just a copy of the existing agreement.
David said during the member Q&A session of the party meeting, “Donald Trump tried to claim that he had achieved success in Greenland, but in reality, he had gotten almost just a rehash of agreements existing since the 1950s.”
He also added, “So let Donald Trump pretend that he has won a victory. The fact is that Europe, NATO, and countries like Canada stepped forward to oppose him, and they won.”
The Liberal Democrats have long been the third largest political force in the UK, but they cannot be compared to the Labour Party or the Conservative Party. In recent years, their influence has been surpassed by the UK Reform Party.
It is reported that Trump has been attempting to purchase or annex this semi-autonomous territory for several months, and he continuously portrays Greenland as facing a so-called ‘threat’. He claims that the region is ‘vulnerable to influences from opponents such as Russia and China’.
Fraser-Rkson said she is 'happy that all three parties hope to reach a good agreement', and expects the agreement to be signed at the United Nations General Assembly next week.
She stated in a joint statement with Prime Minister Jens-Frederick Nielsen of Greenland that the agreement "strengthened our shared security in the Arctic and North Atlantic", while also affirming "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Danish Kingdom and the right to self-determination of the Greenlandic people are respected."
The statement indicates that the agreement will only come into effect after going through the “necessary parliamentary procedures”.
It is reported that since taking over Downing Street, Bernam has spoken with Trump at least twice. The British government states that Bernam intends to use the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for solutions to issues that are directly relevant to the country’s citizens, including cost-of-living issues and the war in Ukraine.
