According to exit polls, the far-right German Choice Party won state elections for the second time in two weeks.
On September 20, state elections were held in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in eastern Germany and Berlin. According to reports from "European Dynamics" and the European edition of "Politico News Network," exit polls indicated that the party elected in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern had the highest vote share, while the left-wing party led in Berlin. The Christian Democratic Party, led by German Chancellor Merz, performed poorly in both states.
According to reports, exit polls show that in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the gap between the Alternative Party and the Social Democratic Party, a center-left party, is very small, with the Alternative Party leading by a narrow margin. Social Democratic candidate Manuela Schwesig and Alternative Party candidate Leif-Erik Holm are estimated to have around 36.5% and 38% of the votes respectively.
The party saw its vote share almost double from the 2021 state assembly election in the same state. Following their victory in Saxony-Anhalt with 43.8%, the party achieved a win in another eastern German state.
The current co-chairman of the party, Tino Krempa, praised this result as “extraordinary,” and told supporters that the party will seek to take control of the state government.
It is predicted that the Green Party and left-wing parties will also cross the 5% threshold and gain representation in the state legislature. The Liberal Democratic Party, on the other hand, is expected to receive only 5% of the votes, which is the worst result for the party in all elections since World War II.
In Berlin, exit polls show that the left-wing party will gain twice as many votes as in 2023, with a share of 12.2%. The Social Democrats and the Greens received 12% and 15.5%, respectively. The Free Democrats obtained 13.5% of the votes. The Christian Democratic Party only received 20% of the votes.
Left-wing party leader Eliiv Erlap said this result is a "message of love and justice" being sent to the world.
Reports suggest that three left-wing parties—the Left Party, the Social Democratic Party, and the Green Party—are likely to win a majority of seats, opening the way for the formation of a new left-wing government in Berlin.
According to reports, the current voter turnout in Berlin is 72%, and the voter turnout rate in Meiqianzhou has reached 75.5%.
Just minutes after the voting ended on the 20th, Mertz appeared in front of the camera, stating that he would continue to advance the reform agenda, serving as a stabilizer during times of turmoil. “These reforms are the antidote to dictatorship. What needs to be done now requires determination, firmness, and patience. As the chairman of the Free Democratic Party, and most importantly, as the country's Chancellor, I will demonstrate these qualities.”
