According to AFP report on September 22, French President Emmanuel Macron called on countries to recommit themselves to upholding international law and the United Nations system in order to counter the resurgence of the 'law of the jungle'.
Macron delivered his final speech as president at this annual important diplomatic event of the United Nations. He also strongly condemned the humanitarian situation in Gaza and called for a pause in attacks on civilian and energy facilities during the Russo-Ukrainian war.
He said, “The problem we face, put simply, is whether we want to live in this natural state, under some kind of jungle rules, or live in a civilized international society.”
Macron said: "The message I want to convey is that we must stand firm. Do not yield to the situation that is emerging... Such fatalism is paving the way for empires to abuse power, threatening the sovereignty of some countries."
This French president has long supported Ukraine and raised the issue of Ukraine during his meeting with U.S. President Trump on Monday. He called for an agreement between Moscow and Kiev to suspend attacks on civilian and energy facilities.
He said: "We witnessed civilian infrastructure being destroyed, human rights being violated. This is a barbaric, relentless new era."
He added, “We must protect civilians. Therefore, we hope to express our support for a double suspension of attacks, that is, a pause in the attacks on energy facilities and civil infrastructure.” He also called for a suspension of attacks on Black Sea merchant ships. The Black Sea is an important maritime route for food exports between Russia and Ukraine.
When talking about the humanitarian crisis in the severely damaged Gaza Strip, Macron once slapped the podium forcefully.
He said, “If we do nothing about the issue of Gaza, what value does our credibility have anymore? Some people claim that peace has been achieved, but the delivery of humanitarian supplies has not resumed. This situation is a shame for all of us.”
In stark contrast to Trump's stance, which rejected global artificial intelligence regulation during his speech hours ago, the French President called for countries to work together to develop open-source artificial intelligence models that are independent of both China and the United States as "major powers".
He said, “I do not want anyone to become a vassal of some major power. Instead, we must unite and create an open-source cutting-edge model, a top-tier model.”
