Flavio Bolsonaro Vows Neutral Foreign Policy Amidst Brazil Presidential Bid

According to Bloomberg, on October 8th local time, Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro and a candidate for the Liberal Party, said that if he were elected as Brazil's president, he would cooperate with China and the United States.

On that day, Flavio said at an event in Brazil’s capital, Brasília: "I will not take sides. Whether dealing with China, Israel, the Middle East, Argentina, or India, my stance will always be that of the Brazilian people. This is how I govern."

In the first round of the presidential election in Brazil on October 4th, Flavio achieved an unexpected result, coming in first place with 56.1 million votes. This outcome led to a significant increase in Brazilian assets, as investors believed he was more likely to implement fiscal policies that would benefit the market.

According to a poll conducted by Brazilian polling agency Datafolha on the evening of the 8th, in the second-round voting on October 25th, excluding blank and invalid ballots, Flavio would receive 52% of the valid votes, while the current Brazilian president Lula would receive 48%. The margin of error for this survey is plus or minus two percentage points.

Bloomberg believes that if Flavio wins, he will complete the conservative shift of South America's major economies and become a right-wing ally of U.S. President Trump. Trump has been trying to restore America's influence in the Western Hemisphere, while this region is increasingly drawing closer to China.

Flavio promised to cooperate closely with the Trump administration in the areas of trade and crime combat. He also announced plans to join the U.S.-led "Defending America" security initiative. In May this year, he visited the White House to meet with Trump.

Bloomberg reported that if Flavio is elected, he will face Brazil’s close economic and trade relations with China. China is Brazil’s largest trading partner and a major market for Brazilian agricultural products. In recent years, Chinese companies have continued to invest in sectors such as energy, electric vehicles, and manufacturing in Brazil.
