According to the official China Earthquake Network, at 01:56 on October 10th, Beijing time, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred in Panama (latitude 7.50 degrees north, longitude 80.65 degrees west), with a focal depth of 10 kilometers. The capital, Panama City, experienced strong shaking. Shortly after the earthquake, several aftershocks of magnitude 5 were reported in the country. The earthquake caused damage to buildings in some areas, and no reports of casualties or property losses have been released by officials yet.
The United States tsunami warning system issued an alert on that day, stating that tsunamis could occur in some coastal areas of Panama and surrounding countries. Currently, the agency has cancelled the relevant tsunami warnings.
After the strong earthquake, the Tocumen Airport in Panama took preventive measures and closed temporarily. Now, operations have gradually resumed. The Panama City subway also implemented emergency evacuations, and lines 1 and 2 of the subway were suspended. The Panama Electric and Gas Company stated that due to the earthquake, power supply interruptions occurred in six areas across Panama. The Panama Canal continued to operate normally.
According to CCTV reports, there have been no reports of casualties among Chinese-funded enterprises or Chinese citizens to date.
