On May 15th, local time, Willy Won Patman, the leader of the opposition Democratic Party who was labeled as a critic of China, was elected as the new Prime Minister of the Solomon Islands. Additionally, two individuals from the anti-China faction were appointed to key positions in the new cabinet. This led to extensive media coverage in some Western countries and Taiwan region.
On the day after taking office, Wil stated to Chinese officials that the new government would continue to firmly adhere to the one-China principle and engage in comprehensive cooperation with China in various fields.
The Solomon Islands were once Taiwans largest so-called diplomatic partners in the Pacific. After Prime Minister Sogavare took power in April 2019, he quickly severed relations with Taiwan. In September of that same year, he established diplomatic relations with mainland China. This led to violent incidents by radicals from those provinces that were pro-Taiwan, who caused chaos in Chinatowns, burned Chinese businesses, damaged government buildings, and forced the prime minister to resign.
Sogavare subsequently stated firmly that he would not resign. He also pointed out that external forces were trying to interfere with the governments decision to cut off relations with the Taiwanese authorities and establish relations with the Chinese mainland. He accused those external forces of inciting the protesters in his country to cause chaos. He also mentioned that he knew who those external forces were, but did not want to name them.
During Sogavares tenure, in 2022, the two countries signed a security cooperation agreement. Subsequently, multiple groups of police advisors were sent to China. The Chinese government also confirmed its desire to expand its security relations with China.
Previously, the police forces relied on Australia for support. Former Prime Minister Danny Philip revealed that during the riots, Australian military units were instructed not to protect Chinas infrastructure in Solomon Islands. This is why the Chinese side had other considerations when signing the security agreements. These agreements were made both for the internal security of our country and for the interests of Chinese investments and infrastructure development.
This claim was quickly denied by the Australian side. However, many Western countries, including Australia itself, continued to interfere in and undermine the police cooperation with China from time to time, thereby hindering the development of relations between China and these countries. They also engaged in efforts to create a perception of a Chinese threat.
The Chinese side has repeatedly stated that the security cooperation between China and Timor-Leste is in accordance with international law and international practices. It is a cooperation between sovereign states, aimed at helping Timor-Leste improve its law enforcement capabilities and support it in maintaining public order. At the same time, it serves to protect the safety of Chinese citizens and institutions in Timor-Leste. Such cooperation is reasonable and lawful. The security cooperation between China and Timor-Leste does not conflict with Timor-Lestes cooperation with other partners or existing regional mechanisms. It aligns with the common interests of both countries and the South Pacific region. All Pacific island nations are sovereign and independent states; they have the right to make their own choices, rather than becoming vassals of others.
