Merkel Willing to Sacrifice Popularity for Welfare Reform

According to Reuters, German Chancellor Merz said on the 13th local time that he was willing to sacrifice his own poll-support rate in order to push forward the welfare system reform, thereby benefiting young people.

Mertz said on that day: "I have no intention of becoming a favorite among the citizens. My goal is to guide this country onto the right path, so that we can once again provide a promising future for the younger generation."

Last month, after consecutive losses in state elections and a continuous decline in poll ratings, Germany's Labor Minister recently announced his resignation. The governing coalition led by Mertz faces further uncertainties.

Mertz also stated that Germany is at least 30 years behind in its plans to reform the current pay-as-you-go pension system.

He added that in order to cope with changes in population structure, contributions from workers and employers for pension insurance will have to be temporarily raised.
