According to Reuters, former US Vice President Harris urged governments and tech companies to implement security measures for artificial intelligence as soon as possible on October 14. She also warned that the window for addressing the most serious risks associated with AI is closing.
"If we want to set up any protective barriers and safety mechanisms, the AI developers must be involved," Harris said in a speech at the Korea Mountain Policy Research Institute. "My worry is that this time window is closing."
Harris stated that governments and companies must take immediate action to address the three major 'existential threats' posed by AI: cybersecurity threats, AI-enabled weapons, and systems that are out of human control.
She also called for cooperation between the United States and China on international rules and standards related to artificial intelligence, emphasizing that broader strategic competition between the two countries should not prevent both sides from working together to address risks.
"In areas where the interests of both sides align, there exists a space for cooperation," Harris said, and he advocated for "healthy and powerful competition instead of conflict."
She also criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policies as 'capricious', and warned that a trade-oriented foreign policy could lead to the United States losing its global influence.
When asked if he would run for president again in 2028, Harris replied, "I am still considering and have not made a decision."
