After American journalists were attacked by Jewish settlers, American officials began pressing Israel to take action to stop the increasingly severe violence committed by settlers on the West Bank.
According to Reuters report on October 17th, US Secretary of State Rubio said that the United States hopes Israel will take more measures to prevent attacks by settlers in the West Bank.
We felt deep unease about these images and the situation we witnessed. Rubiò said, "We have requested Israel to take strict measures against such actions, and we are continuing to make this request."
Rubio made the statement to reporters before boarding the flight to Uzbekistan. He said that the U.S. State Department has inquired about the related incident with Israel, and expects to receive a response from the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem by the 18th.
On October 16th local time, American Washington Post journalist Heidi Levin was interviewing Palestinians picking olives on the West Bank when she was attacked by a group of masked Israeli settlers. The Israeli government has different reactions to this situation. Israeli President Ehrlichson called Levin to apologize for the attack and to request an investigation. Netanyahu, however, questioned the reports from reporters regarding the incident, saying that “the facts are still unclear, and there are still several major questions remaining.”
According to Bloomberg, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Hecker also publicly condemned the attack on the 17th, demanding a ‘full investigation’ of the incident, and the arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
Hekabi wrote on social media: "Attacking a female journalist is a despicable terrorist act committed by a masked coward. It is a shameful and meaningless act of violence."
Recently, there has been an increasing number of violent incidents involving settlers on the West Bank.
Israeli settlements supervisory organizations Yesh Din data show that since the beginning of the olive harvest season in late September, Israeli settlers on the West Bank have been involved in at least 170 attacks targeting Palestinians.
On the second day after Levin was attacked, on October 17th, a group of masked settlers armed with metal sticks attacked European diplomats who were visiting the West Bank. The attackers included the Belgian consul general, a French mayor, Polish diplomats, and Catholic representatives.
Last month, countries such as the UK, France, and Canada announced sanctions against Israeli settlements. The United States stated that it would not participate in these sanctions.
