On October 19th, local time, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a message on social media, calling for New Mexico to change its state name to "New American State".
"New Mexico should immediately be renamed New America," Trump stated, "We are not Mexican, we are the United States of America."
He wrote on social media: "This name will greatly enhance the value and reputation of New Mexico! Housing prices and incomes will rise, and you will be even more proud when you salute our beautiful American flag!"
"Even after changing the name, perhaps even New Mexico State, which was once famous for its rigged elections, could become fair and transparent again." He added.
This is another attempt by Trump to change the name of New Mexico.
Last month, he shared a map on social media. On the map, the word “Mexico” in the state name was covered with a large “X”, and below it was written “United States”. The White House official account then shared this image on the social platform X.
Later on the evening of the 19th, Senator Ben Ray Luhahn of New Mexico said: "The name of New Mexico can be traced back hundreds of years, even before the founding of the United States. It carries the history, culture, and rich traditions of several generations, all of which continue to shape us."
He responded on social media saying: “We are New Mexicans. We are proud of our name, and proud of our homeland, we will always keep them. Even after Trump leaves office as president long afterwards, we remain New Mexicans.”
The Democratic candidate for New Mexico governor, Deb Harland, told Trump on social media that he “should focus on ending this war, stopping these tariffs, lowering prices, rather than renaming our state.”
Previously, Trump ordered that the “Gulf of Mexico” be renamed “American Gulf,” and Lake Ontario be renamed “American Lake.” Earlier this month, at a campaign rally in Tennessee, he also said that he was “considering” renaming the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean.
