Trumps Remarks on Taiwan: Economic Tool or Genuine Concern?

On October 28th, the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office held a regular press conference.

Reporter asked: U.S. President Donald Trump recently mentioned Taiwan again, criticizing Taiwanese chips for competing with American products at low prices. He also said that if there had been a wise president in the United States in the past, problems between Taiwan and the mainland would not have existed, and "nobody cares about the Taiwan Strait issue." What is your opinion on Trump's remarks? Do you think this reflects the U.S.'s view of Taiwan as an economic tool, rather than a genuine concern for peace in the Taiwan Strait?

According to Chen Binhua, a spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, our position on the Taiwan issue is consistent and clear. The Democratic Progressive Party's authorities, in their attempt to 'seek independence with the help of the United States', betray the dominant industries within Taiwan without any principles or boundaries, sacrifice the future of the industry, and harm the interests of the people. This will only accelerate the destruction of Taiwan.

According to American media reports, Trump once again publicly criticized Taiwan during an interview with Fox News Network on the 25th. He accused Taiwan of '100% stealing' American chip business. He stated that Taiwanese manufacturing companies produce semiconductors at 'absolutely ridiculous prices' and dump them globally, causing most American domestic chip companies, except Intel, to be in trouble.

During the program, Trump also blamed the current tensions across the Taiwan Strait on the policy mistakes of previous U.S. leaders. He said, “If we had wise presidents in the past, the issue between Mainland China and Taiwan would not even exist. Such issues would never be considered by anyone.”
