US-Iran MOU Signed, Set for Geneva Signing

According to Xinhua News Agency, the United States, Iran, and Pakistan, who are involved in the mediation of the US-Iran negotiations, confirmed on June 15 Beijing time that the US and Iran have reached a memorandum of understanding, and it is scheduled to be signed in Geneva, Switzerland on the 19th.

At a regular press conference on the 15th, Lin Jian, a spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that China welcomes the agreement reached between the United States and Iran regarding the content of the first-phase memorandum of understanding, and appreciates the efforts made by Pakistan as a mediator.

"China side hopes the US will sign the first phase of memorandum of understanding as scheduled. China side wishes all parties to persist in peace and choose dialogue and negotiation to resolve issues." Lin Jian said that China side is willing to work with the international community to play a positive role in restoring peace and stability in the Middle East and the Arabian Gulf region at an early date."

On the 14th, U.S. President Donald Trump posted a message on social media stating that the US-Iran agreement was “completed.” In the early morning of the 15th, the Secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council issued a statement saying that, according to the reached agreement, wars and military operations in various fronts, including those in Lebanon, would “immediately and permanently cease” from the evening of the 14th. The maritime blockade against Iran would be lifted immediately. Further negotiations regarding the final agreement will begin after the other party fulfills its obligations under the memorandum of understanding.

The official signing ceremony will take place in Switzerland on the 19th. All parties will hold preparatory meetings in Doha, Qatar this week.
