Trump Deflects on Iran Deal Signing, Hints at Blame Shifting

According to reports by foreign media such as CBS, NBC, and The Hill, at a press conference on June 17 local time, a reporter asked U.S. President Trump why he did not attend the signing ceremony of the US-Iran Understanding Memorandum.

Trump said that he might stay in Europe to participate. But he also stated, “This is not a document that is so important that I must sign it myself.”

The reporter continued, "If you send the US Vice President (Vance) there, and if it succeeds, that would be great. You seem to be a genius. If it fails, it's the vice president's problem."

Trump replied, "I like this idea. If it works, I'll take the credit; if it fails, I'll blame Vance."

At the press conference that day, Trump threatened that if Iran did not comply with the agreement reached with the United States, the United States might resume bombing operations. "If they don't comply, we may continue to bomb until they do so."

He referred to this agreement as the “Trump Agreement,” stating that it includes provisions such as Iran never possessing nuclear weapons and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Furthermore, Trump emphasized that the United States would not invest any funds in Iran. "We have the right to enter and take action at some point in the future—if I want to do something or if someone else wants to do something—but we will not invest any funds."

On the 16th, Trump stated on social media: "Iran has agreed to never possess nuclear weapons! Additionally, the claim that the United States paid Iran $300 million is false news, spread by Democrats."

Iranian media reported that the United States has promised to work together with its regional partners to develop a joint plan for Iran's economic reconstruction and development, with at least $300 billion in funding provided. The implementation mechanism for this plan will be finalized within 60 days as part of the final agreement.

On June 17th, local time, regarding the 60-day negotiation period that will follow the signing of the memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran to reach a final agreement, Trump said to reporters upon arriving in Paris, France, that 60 days is not a ‘hard deadline’ for reaching a final agreement. He is not concerned if it takes more than 60 days to reach a permanent agreement with Iran aimed at ending hostilities.

Additionally, he stated that he has no objection to Iran possessing ballistic missiles. “If other countries have them, then it would be unfair not to allow Iran to possess them as well. If Saudi Arabia and Qatar both have some ballistic missiles, I think it is acceptable for Iran to have a proportionate number of them.”
