Xi Meets with Pak Tae-seong: Commemorating 65th Anniversary of China-North Korea Treaty

Xi Jinping pointed out that last month, I conducted an official visit to North Korea. Together with General Secretary Kim Jong-un, we provided strategic guidance for consolidating and developing the traditional friendship between China and North Korea, and for continuously giving it new connotations in the modern era. Generational friendship, shared destiny, and mutual support have always been the distinctive features of China-North Korea relations. The China-North Korea Friendship, Cooperation, and Mutual Assistance Treaty lays an important political and legal foundation for consolidating the friendly bond between the two peoples that was forged through bloodshed. General Secretary Kim Jong-un and I agreed to take the 65th anniversary of the signing of the treaty as an opportunity to remember the original intentions of the older generation of leaders from both parties and countries. We will guide the people of both countries to inherit and carry forward the traditional friendship between China and North Korea, ensuring that bilateral relations continue to thrive in this new historical period.

Xi Jinping emphasized that currently, the international situation is characterized by instability and complexity. China and North Korea should maintain strategic resolve, enhance strategic confidence, and accelerate the implementation of the consensus reached with General Secretary Kim Jong Il. This will ensure that bilateral relations evolve in line with the times and always develop in a direction that helps to strengthen their respective socialist endeavors and promote the modernization of their countries. It is necessary to steadily advance practical cooperation, continuously consolidate popular support, make good use of common red memories and resources, so that young people from both countries can remember the historical achievements of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. The great China-North Korea friendship should be passed down from generation to generation. It is also important to strengthen strategic collaboration, firmly defend their respective autonomy, security, and development interests, and create a favorable external environment for both countries to pursue socialist paths that suit their own national conditions.
