On the evening of December 3, 2024, Yin Xiyue issued an emergency martial law order. The next morning, the South Korean National Assembly passed a resolution calling for the removal of the martial law order. Subsequently, Yin Xiyue was suspended from her duties, arrested, and impeached.

On January 13th of this year, the special prosecutor’s office in South Korea, responsible for investigating the emergency martial law incident, requested the court to sentence Yoon Suk-eul to death on charges of leading an insurrection. During the closing hearing, Yoon Suk-eul continued to insist that the martial law measures were merely “warning” and “call-to-action” measures, and that they were exercises of power granted to the president by the constitution.

It is understood that Yoon Suk-yeol is the first former South Korean president in nearly 30 years to be put on trial for charges related to civil unrest, following President Chun Doo-hwan and President Roh Tae-woo. He is also the second former president to be ordered by prosecutors to be sentenced to death, following President Chun Doo-hwan, who was eventually released from prison.

On February 19th, a South Korean court issued its first-instance judgment in the case of Yoon Seok-yeom's alleged involvement in civil unrest, sentencing him to life imprisonment. The court determined that Yoon Seok-yeom ordered the blockade of the parliament and arrested the chairman of the parliament, leaders of the opposition party, and the ruling party, among other actions, with the aim of ‘disabling the functions of the parliament’.

On February 24th, Yoon Sik-yeol officially filed an appeal against the ruling that sentenced him to life imprisonment for the crime of 'internal disorder'.
