NVIDIA Donates Supercomputer to Naval Postgraduate School

According to Reuters report on July 22, NVIDIA and the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) announced on Wednesday that the artificial intelligence chip giant has donated a supercomputer equipped with its latest chips to a non-profit organization associated with the school.

The United States Naval Academy is operated by the U.S. Navy. It offers master's and doctoral programs in fields such as computer science and aerospace engineering, with a focus on the application of these disciplines in warfare.

NVIDIA donated a system based on the GB300 “Grace Blackwell” server to the non-profit organization associated with the university—the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation. This is NVIDIA’s most advanced artificial intelligence computing system currently available.

NVIDIA and the Naval Postgraduate School did not disclose the specific size of this system, but confirmed that it has been installed on the campus of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Admiral Samuel J. Palaos, commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang plan to hold an event there to officially announce this system.

Although NVIDIA Blackwell chips were previously planned for use in government supercomputers built by the U.S. Department of Energy, this donation marks the first time the U.S. military has used NVIDIA’s most advanced artificial intelligence servers directly.

Huang Renxun said in his statement: "Artificial intelligence will become a pillar of the U.S. defense."

The United States is accelerating the application of artificial intelligence in the military domain, including for creating lists of targets to be attacked and for drone operations.

In his statement, General Papparo said: "While advancing technological modernization, we must also modernize the way we cultivate leadership talent. Having advanced computing capabilities means that faculty and students at the Naval Postgraduate School can better understand the opportunities and responsibilities brought by these technologies."

One advantage of artificial intelligence is that it can handle complex and rapidly changing problems more quickly than traditional computer simulation techniques.

Huang Renxun has been moving between China and the United States. On one hand, he provides the most advanced chips to the US market in order to help the White House win the global competition. On the other hand, he continues to try to sell his lower-end products to the Chinese market.

In a recent interview with Axios News, Kevin Wang said that Chinese open-source AI models are “very excellent” and that American companies “should use them.” He also warned that restricting open-source models could potentially weaken the United States' competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence.
