According to the Guardian's report on August 13th, a 17-year-old teenager from Massachusetts, USA, has been detained for allegedly killing his mother and brother. Prosecutors stated that the case is related to his use of ChatGPT, and authorities are conducting an investigation into this matter.
The juvenile involved is named Aljun Alavind. He appeared in court for his first interrogation at the Concord District Court on the 13th. His lawyer represented him during the trial, arguing for his innocence and denying all the charges of murder and other accusations.
According to the authorities, Aljong killed his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Vinkatesan, and her 14-year-old brother, Sidhart Alavind, in his home on the 11th.
The prosecution stated that on the afternoon of the incident, Aljon’s tutor arrived at his home as agreed, but was unable to contact the resident, which alerted the authorities. The police arrived at the scene shortly after 6:30 p.m., and found that both victims were no longer alive—the brother’s body was located on the first floor of the residence, and the mother’s body was in the basement.
However, in investigating the motives behind the violence, authorities discovered 'concerning online activities'.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said at a press conference that current investigations show that Al-Jun has been acting abnormally recently, having searched for fantasy scenarios related to killing family members through the internet and ChatGPT.
Ryan pointed out that the teenager had planned murders in the form of fantasy novels. He used ChatGPT to create fantasy stories similar to 'gothic novels'. He constantly posed questions, designed characters, and simulated scenarios such as 'what would happen if a certain situation occurred'? These contents clearly involved threats against his family.
According to CBS News, prosecutor Susanna Wiseman said on Thursday that although the official cause of death has not been finalized, she described the incident as a "intense physical struggle."
Wiseman said: 'Based on the physical evidence found at the scene, both victims suffered injuries from blunt objects.'
Several hours after the incident, Al-Jun was found and arrested by police in his mother’s car at around 3:40 a.m. Investigators discovered some physical evidence related to the crime scene in the car. Wiseman stated, “Many of the items found in that car matched the conditions at the murder scene.”
Currently, Alqiong faces multiple charges including two murders, two cases of domestic violence against family members, two assault charges, unauthorized use of a vehicle, and theft of a motor vehicle.
In fact, this is not the first time that artificial intelligence chatbots have been associated with criminal activities.
Earlier this year, the Chief Prosecutor of Florida launched a criminal investigation into whether ChatGPT “could cause harm to users or others,” including whether this AI “provided important advice to a gunman who carried out large-scale shootings last year.”
At that time, the spokesperson for ChatGPT stated in a statement that while the shooting incident was indeed a tragedy, “ChatGPT is not responsible for this horrible crime.” The spokesperson also said that the tool only answered questions based on publicly available information on the internet, and “did not encourage or promote any illegal or harmful activities.”
