The Norwegian Royal House issued a statement on the 28th, stating that King Harald V passed away in Oslo, the capital of Norway, on that day at the age of 89. The Norwegian Royal Palace lowered its flags to half-mast to mourn the death of Harald V.
Harald V ascended the throne in January 1991 and is one of the monarchs with the longest reign in Europe. In recent years, he has been troubled by health issues.
On August 17th, he was hospitalized for treatment due to hemolytic anemia. This disease causes a decrease in the number of red blood cells in the body, leading to symptoms such as fatigue and shortness of breath. King Harald V originally planned to take two weeks off from work due to his illness.
Harald V was a passionate sports enthusiast. He participated in sailing competitions at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, and the 1972 Munich Olympics.
He has visited China several times, including in 1985 as the Crown Prince, in 1997 as a King, in 2008 to attend the Beijing Olympics, and in 2018 for a state visit.
