In the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, eastern Germany, held on Sunday, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) received 44% of the votes, more than doubling its vote share compared to the long-time ruling Christian Democratic Party (CDU). The party would have needed only three seats to achieve an absolute majority in the state parliament.
This election result has dealt a blow to the leader of the CDU, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and to the major political parties that have been in power since World War II. Earlier, after Jürgen Wündrich, the joint chairman of the German Choice Party, congratulated Sigmeinder, the chief candidate in Saarland on X, American entrepreneur and former head of the “Government Efficiency Department” Elon Musk responded with “Well done!” (In German media, this is often translated as “Gut gemacht!” or “Well done!”). Sigmeinder then replied to Musk, expressing her gratitude for his “support” and saying that if the Choice Party were to govern Saarland, she welcomed “strong and constructive cooperation”. She also said that Germany would become a “investment-worthy place” again.
Trump administration officials have long supported the German Alternative Party. The United States' support for populist movements in other countries often leads to diplomatic tensions. In 2025, U.S. Vice President Viscer was met with Weidel, who was criticized by Germany for interfering in elections.
