According to Reuters reports on September 22nd, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico further intensified his criticism of the European Union that day. He stated that the EU failed to address the soaring fuel prices and should hold an emergency summit regarding this issue.
He stated in a statement that the European Union permits member states to suffer from the devastating consequences of the oil crisis.
As a member of the European Union, we are required to make up for sky-high fuel costs by sacrificing pensions or healthcare, which not only exposes the ineptitude of the EU but also reveals its cold and heartless attitude.
Fisio pointed out that the EU quickly convened an emergency summit and provided Ukraine with billions of euros in funding. He argued that the EU should also demonstrate the same urgency in addressing the living costs of its citizens. He added that the Slovak government will introduce measures to control prices, and a decision will be made on September 23.
According to Reuters, Fico has consistently criticized the EU's energy policies, especially those emission reduction requirements that drive up electricity costs. Additionally, Fico has begun to frequently criticize the EU and NATO regarding economic conditions and the West's response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Slovakia once obstructed the approval of EU sanctions against Russia, engaged in many conflicts with the EU, and refused to participate in the plan to provide financial assistance to Ukraine. Fico also seeks to restore economic cooperation with Russia. Since the 2022 Russia-Ukraine conflict, he has met with Russian President Putin several times, and Slovakia continues to purchase Russian natural gas.
Reports indicate that Fico's latest remarks continue his stance from last week. At that time, he accused some unnamed Western politicians within NATO of attempting to wage war against Russia, and stated that although Slovakia is bound by NATO's Article V (Collective Defense) clause, he did not want his country to be involved in conflicts.
