According to American media reports, U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. In his speech, he criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC) harshly, calling it a 'rogue institution', and urged all member states of that institution to withdraw from it.
Trump accused the International Criminal Court of being "a group of evil people" in his speech, stating that the United States would not allow American soldiers or others to face "showy trials" before such an "anti-American court." He also said that the court has no jurisdiction over the United States. At the time of these remarks, Trump’s cabinet is preparing to take the "most comprehensive measures" against the International Criminal Court.
According to earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal, the Trump administration is preparing to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court, aiming to disengage it from most of the global financial system. Under the proposed measures, most cross-border transactions could be prohibited after a six-to-seven-month grace period, which would make it difficult for the International Criminal Court to use the dollar in related activities.
Previously, the United States had designated several judges and prosecutors, including Karim Khan, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, and Tomoaki Akane, as targets of sanctions. This now indicates that the Trump administration has further escalated its sanctions measures against individual members of the International Criminal Court.
U.S. Secretary of State Rubio also stated in July this year that the U.S. government is preparing to take more significant actions against the International Criminal Court. He argued that the measures taken by the court against officials from non-member states “threatened U.S. sovereignty”.
