According to a report by Russian satellite news agency on October 1st, volcanologists have stated that the underglacial volcano located in the south of Iceland, Katla, could erupt suddenly.
Iceland University's volcanic experts and professor Halldór Gílsson Gílsson said, "The Katafell volcano has not erupted since 1918, and there is frequent seismic activity. It is said that the volcano could erupt suddenly."
Another professor at the University of Iceland, volcanologist and climate expert Thórsvardsson, revealed that over the past 1,000 years, the Katahdere volcano has erupted about 20 times, averaging once every 50 years.
Solstadon said: "Based on the frequency of volcanic eruptions, it can be inferred that Katar volcano could erupt at any time."
He said that if a volcano beneath the ice sheet erupts, it could trigger powerful glacial floods, posing a threat to the nearby village of Vik. This village is famous for its black volcanic beaches and is a popular destination for tourists.
