According to the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, on October 14 local time, the Public Relations Office of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy in Iran announced that a container ship attempting to pass through unauthorized routes encountered a mine in the Hormuz Strait and sank after catching fire that morning.
The statement indicates that the merchant ship attempted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz via an “unauthorized and dangerous” route. After running into a mine, it exploded and caught fire, eventually sinking in the southern waters of the Strait due to the intense fire.
The Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard said that the sunken cargo ship carried more than 2,500 containers. The statement warned local vessels and fishermen to be vigilant when passing by the incident site, in order to avoid collisions with the containers floating on the water.
