According to the BBC, the British government will invest 100 million pounds (approximately 890 million RMB) in the construction of an AI bio-safety laboratory.
British Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey also promised to invest millions of pounds in various supporting programs, to enhance the UK’s ability to respond to evolving online threats, biological threats, and various risks generated by artificial intelligence.
"AI will change everyday life: every enterprise, every community, hospitals, schools, and all aspects of the British economy can benefit from it. I understand and share the concerns of many workers, so I propose a unique path for the development of artificial intelligence in the UK. This plan will not leave workers behind; it will safeguard national interests, while allowing the entire population to share the benefits of growth driven by artificial intelligence," said Sheeri.
UK Artificial Intelligence Minister Kanshika Narayan said that the AI Biosecurity Laboratory will become a new and important international institution, bringing together the world's top scientific research capabilities.
He said, “As artificial intelligence capabilities continue to strengthen, the UK must have the ability to protect its citizens and shape its future independently. This means that we need to be ahead of emerging threats such as cyber attacks and biological risks, while also having a better understanding of the key technologies upon which national security depends.”
In his view, supporting British domestic scientific research, advanced chip industries, and local artificial intelligence companies helps to strengthen national security and create high-quality technical jobs across the country.
According to reports, several companies will also provide support for the establishment of AI bio-safety laboratories. OpenAI and Anthropic will offer AI model computing power worth £200 million (approximately RMB 1.78 billion) for the laboratory to use their large models.
