China Responds to EUs Trade Measures Proposal

October 27th, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Guo Ka Kun presided over a regular press conference.

Bloomberg reporter asked that, according to people familiar with the matter, the EU plans to take trade measures to reduce the import of chemical products, furniture, machinery and other products from China. These measures are expected to be implemented in the first quarter of next year. What is China's comment on this?

Guo Jiaqun said that China always believes that the essence of China-EU relations is partnership, and the foundation of China-EU economic and trade relations is mutual benefit and win-win results. The positive progress made in the second regular meeting of the China-EU Trade and Investment Consultation Mechanism recently indicates that the two sides can effectively resolve economic and trade differences through dialogue and negotiation. Strengthening dialogue and consultation and deepening economic and trade cooperation on the basis of mutual respect is in line with common interests, and it is also a common expectation of both enterprises and the public in both countries.

"We hope the European side respects market economy and fair competition principles, avoids abusing trade relief tools, and promotes the healthy and stable development of Sino-European relations through actual actions." Guo Ka Kun said.

Bloomberg reported on the 26th that the EU's measures may take the form of import quotas or tariffs, and are part of the EU's efforts to reduce its trade deficit with China.

The report mentions that currently, the European Commission is carefully balancing its actions, attempting to boost European industries while avoiding provoking countermeasures from China.
