Midterm Elections: Key House Races to Watch

The voting for the U.S. midterm elections began on November 3rd local time. Newsweek has compiled a list of 10 key House of Representatives elections that deserve attention. These elections involve incumbent lawmakers facing unstable re-election situations, candidates challenging their positions, and electoral districts with diverse voter demographics. The results could not only reveal which party will control the House of Representatives, but also indicate how large a majority of seats the winning party will ultimately secure.

The Democratic Party needs to gain a net of 3 seats in order to reverse the current situation where the Republicans have a majority with 220 seats to 215 seats.

The election forecasting agency Inside Elections currently estimates that the Democratic Party will gain 20 to 30 seats in the House of Representatives. This means that the suspense at the final stage of the election may no longer lie in who will take control of the House, but rather to what extent the Democrats can expand their competitive territory.

Virginia University's Political Research Center's election forecasting agency, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, executive editor Kyle Condic said that if the Republican Party can still retain control of the House of Representatives under these circumstances, it will be an 'extremely shocking outcome'.

Kang Dik said after looking at the selection of electoral districts listed in "Newsweek": "There are many very competitive areas where elections for 2024 will be fought."

He added that the political environment in the United States is now more favorable to the Democratic Party. This should help the party regain some seats that were previously lost by a narrow margin, and pose a threat to the current Republican legislators in other constituencies.

Some of these election battles may help the Democrats gain the 218 seats needed to control the House of Representatives. Other seats may only change hands if the Democrats perform exceptionally well in their elections.

North Eastern University's outstanding professor of political science, Costas Panargopoulos, believes that this wave of elections means that 'in various states and constituencies, a large number of competitive elections are moving in similar directions.'

Former television news anchor Jennifer Stern once again challenged Republican Congressman Scott Perry. Perry served as the chairman of the House Libertarian Party and defeated Stern by a margin of about 5,100 votes in 2024. This election battle is widely regarded as one of the most critical battles in this midterm election.

This constituency, located in the Harrisburg area, is rated as R+3 on the Cook Party voting index, meaning the Republicans have a 3 percentage points advantage over the national average. However, both the Cook Political Report and “Sabato’s Crystals” have rated this constituency as “leaning toward the Democrats”.

A poll conducted by The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Siena Institute from October 16 to 22 showed that both candidates had a support rate of 48%. The survey interviewed 404 potential voters, with an error margin of plus or minus 5.7 percentage points.

The Republican Ryan McKechnie won this seat in the Lehigh Valley region in 2024 by about 4,000 votes, defeating the Democrat Susan Wilder. This year, he will face a challenge from the Democratic candidate Bob Brooks. Brooks is a retired firefighter from Bethlehem and also a leader of a state-level union.

"Cook Political Report" and "Saba's Crystal Sphere" both believe this district leans Democratic.

The poll conducted in Pennsylvania showed that Brooks led with a support rate of 49% to 44%. However, the difference in support between the two candidates is still within an error range of plus or minus 5.7 percentage points.

Republican Congressman Juan Siskoman is running for re-election in a bipartisan district in Tucson. His opponent is Democrat Joanna Mendosa. Mendosa is a retired Marine who served for 20 years and has long been dedicated to protecting the rights of veterans.

"Cook Political Report" and "Sabo's Crystal Ball" both label Arizona's 6th Congressional District as "likely Democratic," while Inside Elections lists it as "leaning Democratic."

Republican Congressman Gab Evans will face Democratic candidate Manny Ruínez. Evans is a former Army veteran who also worked as a police officer; Ruínez is a lawyer and a former state congressman.

Trump won the district in 2024, but Evans’ victory in the representative elections was just 1 percentage point away from Trump. This makes Colorado’s 8th District a typical example of voters supporting candidates from different political parties in various elections.

The above three election forecasting agencies all believe that the Democratic Party has an advantage in this constituency. Therefore, this election will test whether the Democratic Party can regain its dominance in a constituency with a diverse population structure, including suburbs and outer suburban areas.

Two former naval officers will meet again in the Hampton anchorage area: one is Rep. Jan Keegan, who is a Republican and has served as a helicopter pilot and a geriatric nurse; the other is Rep. Elaine Luria, who is a Democrat and a retired naval captain.

Kondique believes that Virginia's 2nd Congressional District is a relatively "easy target" for Democrats, and it serves as a valuable early indicator of trends. This is because Virginia's polling places close earlier than many other key swing states.

Republican Congressman Zac Nunn is running for his third term in office. He is a Colonel in the U.S. Air Force reserve forces, and his opponent is Democratic State Senator and Lutheran pastor Sarah Tron Garilotta.

In 2024, this constituency in Des Moines area supported Trump by a margin of 4.5 percentage points, while Nunn won the representative election by a margin of 3.9 percentage points. The “Cook Political Report” and “Sabato’s Crystal Ball” rated this election as “leaning towards the Democrats,” while Inside Elections rated it as “slightly leaning towards the Democrats.”
