Chinese Embassy Warns Citizens Against Illegal Mining in Malawi

According to a message posted on the WeChat public account of the Chinese Embassy in Malawi on June 18th, the Chinese Embassy in Malawi reminds Chinese citizens and businesses not to engage in illegal mining activities.

Recently, relevant authorities in Malawi have carried out special operations to combat illegal mining activities in many places. Several Chinese citizens have been arrested for participating in illegal mining activities.

In recent years, the Ma government has stepped up efforts to combat illegal mining and cross-border mineral smuggling, and has completely banned the export of raw minerals. Those involved in unlicensed mining and illegal mineral exports will face severe criminal penalties, including heavy fines and even several years of imprisonment. The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia reminds Chinese citizens and businesses in Malaysia:

1. To engage in mining activities in Madagascar, it is necessary to register with the relevant authorities in Madagascar and obtain legal permits for mining rights, mining licenses, land use, and environmental protection approvals, etc., to ensure that business activities are lawful and compliant.

II. The mining of products, their transportation, sales, and exports must comply with relevant laws of Madagascar. It is necessary to ensure that the sources are legal and all procedures are completed. Illegal mining, smuggling, and exports without permission of mining products are strictly prohibited.

III. Strictly comply with individual regulations regarding working and residing in Madagascar. Do not participate in or organize/fundraise, or introduce others to engage in illegal mining activities in the local area.
