According to Reuters, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on June 22, "If Iran fails to fulfill their agreements, or if they behave improperly, I will take the necessary actions."
Trump and Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi signed a memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States in the early hours of the 18th in Tehran. The terms of the memorandum clearly stipulate the US's obligations regarding the unfreezing of assets.
Regarding the thawing of Iranian assets, Trump stated that Iran should use the freed funds specifically for purchasing food from the United States.
Trump insisted, “All this money will be used to buy food that they desperately need. They have 91 million people, yet they cannot feed them. Therefore, the funds we raise will go to our farmers.”
However, according to reports by the Iranian Tasnim News Agency, Iran's Central Bank President Hamt said that under the current memorandum of understanding, Iran has no obligation to purchase agricultural goods from the United States. He added that the remaining frozen funds may not be used solely for purchasing necessities, but could also be used for purchasing other goods that are not subject to sanctions.
