Recently, a report from The New York Times caused a huge stir in American public opinion.
Palantirs co-founder Peter Thiel spent $12 million to purchase a luxurious mansion in Buenos Aires. He also transferred his children to local schools and frequently met with Argentine President Cristina Fernández in private meetings.

For a moment, wild interpretations spread across the internet: some said he had prepared a nuclear shelter to escape the end of the world; others claimed he was completely disillusioned with the United States and decided to escape from it. There were also voices that linked him to the split between Elon Musk and Donald Trump last year, claiming that the tech-right wing and MAGA movement have completely broken up, and Trump has become a discarded pawn.
These stories are very vivid and seem to fit well with some peoples expectations regarding the falling apart of the Trump administration. But to truly understand this narrative of Argentine mansions and ships being abandoned, one must first set aside an unconscious assumptionthat for someone like Till, the country is something worth loyalty to, but also something that can be betrayed. In the eyes of those he represents, the nation-state is simply a tool from beginning to end. Once this understanding is gained, the Argentine houses and the contracts in Washington no longer seem contradictory; instead, they represent two sides of the same plan.
In 2022, The New York Times published an article describing Peter Thiel as a Would-Be Kingmaker who supported MAGA candidates. In the US context, the term Kingmaker isnt actually a unique title; it refers simply to influential individuals who can support leaders. During Trumps election campaign, many people were labeled as Kingmakers. But Thiel truly deserves this title.
Peter Thiels resume is essentially a catalog of power in Silicon Valley: Co-founder of PayPal; the spiritual leader of those who are called the PayPal mafia; one of Facebooks most important external investors; the head of the venture capital firm Founders Fund; the founder and chairman of Palantir, which started its business by monitoring data; and the financial backer and ideological mentor for Vice President Viscer. Today, in the eyes of the media, Thiel is the central figure behind that group known as tech right-wing elitesthose who come from tech and venture capital backgrounds, and who tend to align their politics with conservative populists.
His ideology is often simply labeled as free willism, and this is precisely where misunderstandings begin. Tillers ideas consist of at least three layers, which are interconnected.
The first layer represents a anti-democratic core that prioritizes capital over democracy. What Till advocates for is the unlimited expansion of capital, free from any constraints of democracy. In 2009, in his article Libertarian Education, Till declared, I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible. This shocking statement essentially reflects his concern about how democracy restricts capital among the masses. Since the expansion of universal suffrage and the establishment of welfare states, capital has been forced to cede its redistributive power and accept regulatory controls. In Tills view, this constitutes a fundamental problem. In his book From 0 to 1, he views monopoly as the source of innovation, believing that governance should be vested in a small elite group. This logic leads him to support Curtis Yamin, a representative of neo-reactionalism. Yamin openly advocates for replacing American democracy with monarchy. His ideas not only became part of the mainstream right-wing discourse, but they also deeply influenced key politicians like Vice President Wilson.
The second layer represents a narrative of redemption associated with technological accelerationism. This generation of tech elites generally carries a sense of disillusionment with their expectations. The information age brought them great wealth, but it failed to achieve breakthroughs like those seen in flying cars. As Founders Fund famously lamented, We wanted flying cars, but what we got were just 140 characters. They attribute the stagnation of technology to scientific bureaucratization, excessive regulation, and the decline of elite rule. Their solution involves increasing capital investment and deregulating systems, with the goal of restarting growth through technological singularities. Ethical and social risks, however, are seen as necessary costs in this process.
The third layer involves instrumentalized technological nationalism. On the surface, anti-government libertarians who embrace nationalism may seem contradictory, but in reality, this approach aligns perfectly with capitalist logic: For them, governments serve as essential tools for providing public goods, policy support, and access to large-scale projects. While they reminisce about the golden age of close cooperation between politics, business, and military during the Cold War, they also advocate for Washington to allocate resources toward technology. Palantirs co-founder, Carl Pappas, openly discussed this issue in his book *The Technology Republic*. He described the lagging state of key technologies in the United States as a moment of reckoning for the West. His call for elites to focus on defense and national projects is a clear manifestation of this logic.
Palantir is the most tangible embodiment of these three layers of ideology. This company was named after the Crystal Ball from The Lord of the Rings, which represents a tool for gaining insight into everything. Its business involves turning massive amounts of data into tools for monitoring and decision-making. In its early days, Palantir relied on venture capital funding from the CIA. In 2011, it helped track Ben Laden. In recent years, it has become deeply involved with the Department of Defense. By early 2025, Palantir delivered an AI system called Titan to the Army. It also plays a key role in immigration enforcement. Those who oppose democracy have turned Palantir into one of the governments most loyal suppliers. This seems paradoxical, but it actually illustrates one thing: their anti-democratic actions not only allow them to continue using government resources, but they also try to position themselves at the forefront of those government-funded projects. At the same time, they gradually weaken any democratic accountability that might constrain their actions.

It is precisely because of these three layers of background and Palantirs physical presence that Tills influence on the current American political landscape goes far beyond that of a big donor. His true significance lies not so much in the several political contributions he has made, but rather in the time he has invested over a decade to establish a network of ideas and a pipeline of talent. Over a decade, he has built a dual network for the dissemination of ideas and the delivery of talent, deeply embedded within the Republican Partys power structure.
At the ideological level, as a key figure in the National Conservative Conference, he has been spreading his ideas through speeches and sermons for many years. He also funded publications such as American Affairs, American Greatness, and Stanford Review. Through these outlets, he systematically spread the far-right ideas of marginal theorists like Yavon to the desks of Republican politicians. In terms of talent management, Tillers strategy to cultivate political figures was well-planned from the beginning: starting in 2008, he began seeking out and supporting Republican politicians. By 2016, he became the only elite in Silicon Valley who openly supported Trump. At celebrations, he introduced Musk and Carl Papp to Trump. By Trumps second term in office, this talent pipeline came into full effecthis own protégé, Vance, became Vice President; several members of the PayPal mafia were placed in key government positions. The core members of Musks technology team also came from Palantir or Anduril, companies he invested in. It can be said that all of the policies Washington has implemented regarding technology, regulation, and defense today reflect Tillers long-term plans.
With these three layers of background understood, Argentinas choices become no longer mysterious.
The media has exaggerated this incident as a rich person being frightened and fleeing in a panic. However, this is merely a superficial interpretation. The real logic behind this behavior lies within the 1990s book Sovereign Individuals, which Tiel regards as a fundamental principle to be followed by everyone. The core idea of this book is straightforward and sharp: In the information age, those who possess capital and cognitive advantages have the ability to escape the taxation and control imposed by national governments. They become sovereign individuals – individuals who do not owe loyalty to any single nation. Instead, they view all nations as competitors who compete with each other in terms of services provided, and they seek to compare prices, choose the best options, and exploit opportunities across different jurisdictions. Tiel is precisely the most devout practitioner of this theory in the real world.
Breaking down this methodology of escaping political constraints reveals a clear thread that has persisted over the past twenty years: using technology to create new spaces where state power cannot reach. Tiel clearly identified three cutting-edge areas in his article from 2009the cyberspace, outer space, and maritime homesand took action in each of these areas.
At the online level, he played a key role in founding PayPal. Later, he invested heavily in cryptocurrencies. All these actions stemmed from the same impulse: to break away from government control over monetary sovereignty, allowing values to flow freely beyond national oversight. In the maritime domain, he funded the Sea Home Institute, aiming to create a floating nation with its own legal system off the coast of international waters. On land, he jointly invested with Andresen and others in the Honduran city of Rocafuerte. This city operates under a special economic zone that is highly independent from the government of Honduras. It even allows for clinical trials that bypass FDA regulations. Applying this logic to him personally means a strategy of leveraging nationality for personal gain: he obtained New Zealand citizenship in 2011, applied for a Malta passport in 2022. Now, he owns luxury homes in Argentina, arranges his childrens schooling, and meets with presidentsall part of the same strategic plan.

Its important to note that the core of this methodology goes far beyond simply avoiding certain situations. Its essence lies in strategies for hedging and arbitrage at a sovereign level. In Tillers vision, the ideal world would be one where capital operates above any single democratic government, with citizenship becoming a mere choice among various consumption options. The country with the lowest taxes, strictest regulations, and stable property rights would become the location of subscription rights. The so-called fears of nuclear bombs and shelters are not isolated concerns; they represent an extreme manifestation of this logic of retreating from political constraints. In essence, both backup countries and backup hard drives serve as mechanisms for avoiding certain risks. As for why Argentina was chosen at this moment, the answer isnt romantic: Mileys aggressive regulatory policies, which resemble anarchic capitalism, are currently the most practical experiments in implementing this worldview worldwide. Additionally, a governing president who shares Tillers desire to escape political constraints also played a role. Combined with another practical factora referendum in California proposing a 5% wealth tax on billionairesthis further strengthened his decision.
Therefore, it is important to clarify one point: sources from The New York Times repeatedly emphasized that this relocation was merely a temporary arrangement. $12 million is a negligible amount compared to Tillers net worth of approximately $28 billion. His wealth, company foundation, and political influence still give him a dominant position in the United States. The essence of this situation is an allocation of assets at the sovereign level, treating the nation-state itself as a risk that can be managed. Its about creating a global network that can be switched between different options at any time. For sovereign individuals, a country can serve as multiple subscription services. The key isnt to escape one country, but to refuse to be bound by any single country.
After understanding Tiels personal logic, looking back at that popular claim that technological right-wing groups are abandoning Trump, it becomes clear what is wrong with this statement.
If one only looks at the images presented by the media, its easy to conclude that this is a typical political scenario involving the elimination of those who have been loyal to a particular leader. Musk and Trump clashed publicly over the Great Society Act in 2025. Musk even announced that he would form another political party, while Trump vowed to destroy his company. Now, Musk has moved his headquarters to Argentina, effectively casting a vote of distrust towards American politics. The conclusion seems inevitable: after this honeymoon period ends, Musk will abandon his commitment to MAGA.
The problem is that this relationship never even had the chance to be called a honeymoon at all. From the very beginning, it was a completely mutual exploitation of each others interests. If one tries to interpret it as a romantic relationship, then every argument will be misinterpreted as an endgame situation. There was a clear understanding between tech-rightists and Trumpboth parties knew exactly how they were using each others strengths. Their agendas didnt completely overlap, and neither side expected the other to fully align with their own interests. But in those matters that mattered most, they found common ground, and thus came together. Once either party felt that the other was no longer useful, or that it had compromised their core interests, it became inevitable that they would turn against each other. This is precisely what defines a relationship of mutual exploitation.
So, what was their purpose in embracing Trump? Upon closer examination, it actually corresponds to the realization of those three ideological realities mentioned earlier.
in the response. Do not include any Chinese text in your answer. The first anti-democratic trend is evident in Trumps aggressive efforts to disrupt existing institutions, political norms, and the complex administrative structure of the state. This behavior aligns with the instinct of tech-right-wing groups to weaken democratic accountability. In their vision, the power to determine the direction of technology and industry should be taken back from professional bureaucrats and noisy voters, and given to a small group of elites who have a long-term perspective and are not afraid of the blind masses. What Trump has done is to dismantle those procedures, checks, and balances that they see as obstacles.
Secondly, theres the issue of anti-regulation. On his first day in office, Trump abolished the Biden administrations regulations regarding artificial intelligence. He also gave crypto-related activities a much more lenient approach. Additionally, with Musk leading the way, there were efforts to dismantle regulatory agencies and cut costsessentially, a set of measures that followed the tech-right-wing strategy of letting technology run freely in civilian areas while focusing on supporting strategic areas. Once the tight restrictions on regulation were lifted, AI and crypto-related activities could flourish unchecked.
Thirdly, and most importantly, the goal is to further expand financial capital. The Democratic Partys plan to impose taxes and provide welfare benefits for the middle class was seen by these wealthy individuals as a last straw that would undermine trust. In contrast, Trump revived the concept of trickle economics, promising tax cuts for large corporations and high-income individuals. At the same time, the government provided them with generous incentives: government contracts for Palantir, military contracts for Anduril, $500 billion worth of AI infrastructure projects, exemptions from regulations related to energy and critical minerals, and relaxed H-1B visa regulations in order to attract talent. In other words, Trump turned the country into both a fortress for capital and a cash machine. Of course, these wealthy individuals were willing to cooperate with him for these reasons.

Its precisely because this is a mutual exploitation that the so-called breakdown should be seen as part of the bargaining within this relationship, rather than a real breakdown of the relationship itself. Musks incident is a good example: When the legislation affected his interests, he immediately became hostile and spoke in a harsh manner. But a few months later, they reconciled. They attended the same memorial service together, had dinner at Hollywood Hills, and Musk once again funded Trumps political committee. Recently, they even flew to China together on Air Force One. By the same logic, just as the Thiel family settled in Buenos Aires, Palantir and Anduril received more and more government and military contracts. The person he supported, Vance, still holds his position as Vice President.
Whats even more critical is that this system isnt tied to any specific individual at all. If Trump loses his influence or steps down, Vance will take his placea disciple who was supported by Trump with substantial financial resources and who is deeply influenced by neo-reactionary ideas. After Vance, there will still be a steady stream of people who can be supported. The tech-right wing has been operating this system for over a decade: they fund candidates, organize conferences, maintain publications, manipulate political and business connections, and buy social media platforms to shape public opinion. Their focus has always been on this usable politicians pipeline, which continues to function regardless of who is in charge. Whoever is appointed or removed from this system is merely part of the process. Its not about loyalty, nor about betrayal.
This touches upon the root issue, which is also the most important aspect to be clarified: Tech-right wing groups are not merely electoral factions that rise and fall with Trump. They are a long-term product of the crisis in capitalisms stage. As globalization enters a downward cycle, traditional investment returns decline, and the 2008 financial crisis only compounded the situation. Financial capital urgently needed new ways to generate profits, so it formed deep partnerships with technologies like artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies. At the same time, global competition forced these groups to actively seize control of state institutions, in order to maintain their technological dominance. A class that exists solely to sustain itself cannot possibly disengage from politics. Engaging in politics is its own survival strategy. As long as it has any remaining strength, it will certainly intervene in politics as deeply as possible. Through Trump, Vance, and whoever comes next, it also uses options like Argentina as a way to leave behind a path of survival.
In the end, occupation and withdrawal are like the left and right hands of the same body: One hand clenches Washingtons power, while the other hand lays out escape routes in Buenos Aires. It seems contradictory, but both actions serve the same goalto enable tech-capital elites to avoid democratic accountability and maintain their freedom of action. Till hasnt abandoned anyone. What hes doing is what hes publicly declared to have been his mission for fifteen years: treating the nation-state itself as a risk that needs to be managed carefully.
