According to Bloomberg, India launched its first hydrogen-powered train for commercial operation on the 17th.
Reports indicate that this change is of great significance for a South Asian country where more than half of its electricity still comes from thermal power plants.
Indian Prime Minister Modi presided over the train's departure ceremony on that day. He posted a message on the social media platform "X" saying: "For India, today is an important step towards self-reliance and sustainable development."
This 10-car train can carry approximately 2600 passengers. The Indian Railways says that it is the world’s longest hydrogen-powered passenger railway service, and it will operate on a 89-kilometer section between Khed and Sonipat in Haryana, northern India.
