According to Bloomberg, on October 31, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio defended the decision to invite Russia to this year’s G20 summit, stating that dialogue is the only way to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
Previously, the European Union and other allies in the United States criticized this decision.
On October 31, after a two-day G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Rubio told reporters that U.S. President Trump believes it is important for Russia to be part of the G20 discussions.
His thoughts were that meeting with someone was equivalent to legitimizing them or agreeing to everything they did. This was straightforward: everyone wished for an agreement and ending the conflict. How could there be an agreement without a meeting, let alone settling the conflict? Ruobio said this.
Rubio pointed out that, in addition to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, given Russia's nuclear weapons inventory and the need to avoid conflicts, it is important for the United States and Russia to engage in dialogue.
On that day, when answering reporters' questions, he also stated that he was not sure whether Russian President Putin would attend the G20 leaders' summit in Miami in December. "They neither announced nor confirmed it."
European Union High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Catherine Ashton stated on the same day that it is possible for Putin to attend the G20 leaders' summit, and there is a risk of Russia being allowed to return to normal international forums during the ongoing Russo-Ukraine conflict.
Karla said that the United States's invitation of Russian leaders has 'brought many problems,' which may normalize the 'war crimes' that occur every day in Ukraine.
Previously, due to objections from some European countries regarding a joint photo with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, the organizers canceled the usual group photo session.
During the G20 Foreign Ministers' meeting, Lavrov reiterated Putin's suggestion to reporters, that it would be appropriate for Ukraine's President Zelensky to meet with him in Moscow.
Lavrov also said that it is reasonable for Russia and the United States to cooperate in areas where they share common interests, and referred to the way European countries treat Russia as a form of “arrogant resistance”.
