Polish Doctor Arrested for Burial of Fetal Remains

According to Hong Kong's English-language newspaper The South China Morning Post, on June 15 local time, the Polish prosecution reported that a female doctor has been detained, and law enforcement officers discovered 34 human fetuses buried underground in the garden of her former residence.

According to reports, the woman involved is Magdalena, 57 years old, a pathologist with no previous criminal record. She is suspected of conducting experiments using these fetal remains, and could face up to 12 years in prison.

Poland is a country where Catholicism is the main religious belief, and it is also one of the countries with the strictest laws regarding abortion in Europe. This case has caused a huge public outcry in the country, and many people question how she obtained these fetal remains.

However, a spokesman for the procuratorate stated that there is currently no evidence to suggest that these fetuses resulted from illegal abortion procedures.

According to reports, the doctor faces several accusations, including desecration of corpses, improper disposal of medical waste, and discarding hazardous materials in unauthorized locations.

The exposure of this serious case stemmed from a civil complaint. Last week, the Polish southeastern prosecutor’s office received a report from the public, stating that a large amount of medical waste was found at the construction site of the former residence of the involved doctor.

Dozens of officers, equipped with radar detectors and search dogs, conducted a large-scale search of the entire area. Eventually, at least 34 fetal remains were unearthed beneath the garden.

Rushu District Procuratorate spokesman Krzysztof Czyhanowski said that these remains are very likely to be materials used by the detained woman for various testing experiments.

According to Polish media reports, Magdalena told the prosecutor that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she took fetal remains from the hospital where she worked and brought them home for research purposes.

The spokesman added that in addition to fetal remains, the police also found tens of thousands of microscope slides and a large number of incomplete medical documents during the search.

According to the U.S. Sun newspaper, neighbors describe Magdalena as a reclusive person with mysterious ways.

"I didn't even know what this woman did, I just saw her." A local resident said. Another resident added, "She's a little strange."

According to reports, Magdalena was arrested last Friday, and the court ordered three months of pretrial detention for her.

A spokesperson for the procuratorate said at a press conference that after hearing the charges, the doctor did not plead guilty, but admitted that 'all human fetal remains and other medical waste found at the crime scene were transported and buried by himself'.

Currently, the identities of all fetal remains remain unknown, and it is also uncertain whether Magdalena had accomplices involved in her crimes.
